Our Expertise
For more than 20 years, Phillips & Cohen attorneys have represented whistleblowers in cases involving fraud against the government. Those “qui tam” cases have resulted in recoveries totaling more than $7 billion.
In addition, we are very knowledgeable about the Internal Revenue Service whistleblower program, having worked with the IRS Whistleblower Office in various ways from the time it was set up in 2007.
- Our attorneys worked closely with the IRS Whistleblower Office as part of a lawyers committee to help set up the new whistleblower program.
- At the request of the IRS Whistleblower Office, one of our partners was a speaker at an IRS training session for IRS attorneys who handle whistleblower claims.
- We also have a number of pending whistleblower claims with the IRS that we’ve initiated on behalf of clients under the new program.
With our experience and familiarity with whistleblower cases, the law and the IRS Whistleblower Office, we are able to put together the strongest case possible for our clients to present to the IRS. This preparatory work is crucial. The IRS gets hundreds of whistleblower tips yet has resources to investigate only a small number. The stronger the case, the more likely it is the IRS will investigate your allegations.
Our expertise in tax whistleblower matters has been recognized by others:
- The International Herald Tribune and Pharmaceutical Executive, a major pharmaceutical trade publication, have published articles by a Phillips & Cohen attorney about the tax whistleblower law.
- The Senate Finance Committee invited two of our attorneys to participate in a roundtable discussion about the new tax whistleblower law shortly after it was enacted.
- The Wall Street Journal and “Marketplace,” a business show broadcast by National Public Radio, have interviewed our lawyers for stories about the tax whistleblower law.
Before the whistleblower law was enacted, we represented a confidential informant who hired us to help him get a reward from the IRS for information he had provided about fraudulent tax shelters that cost the U.S. Treasury hundreds of millions of dollars. As a result of our efforts, the IRS awarded him a sizeable reward.
